In live television, an Assistant Producer works closest to the Producer and often works closely with the Gallery Director and the Production Manager as well as other producers on the show. They are involved in a large portion of the pre-production stage, working on whatever is delegated to them by the Producer. This could involve script writing, making phone calls, bringing in cast members and liaising with the rest of the production crew, just to name a few. To fulfil the role to the fullest, an Assistant Producer must be well-organised, have a strong knowledge about the production and must be able to communicate between different parties.
In large scale productions, Assistant Producers may often work unsociable hours and can find themselves travelling around a lot in order to source information, which is why flexibility and mobility are extremely important aspects to have.
Financial management and scheduling in this project will not be done by myself and will instead be done by Imogen, the Production Manager. However in a number of different television genres, not just live television, managing the finances and creating schedules for the production team would often be delegated to the Assistant Producer, which adds to the responsibilities. All of this means that an Assistant producer must be highly motivated often in order to cope with the stress and responsibilities that fall upon them.
